Active Traffic Alert

Eastbound Highway 5 between 494 and Davern St. in St. Paul is now closed through mid-July. Also watch for lane restrictions and ramp closures at the 35E/494 interchange and in the surrounding area.


Additional Travel Impacts

  • 494 is reduced to two lanes in both directions between 34th Ave. and the Minnesota River from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily; Tue, May 19 through Thu, May 28.
  • The ramp from westbound Highway 5 to eastbound 494 is closed starting Tue, May 26 through Thu, June 4. The detour uses westbound 494, Highway 77 and eastbound 494.
  • The ramp from 34th Ave. to eastbound 494 is closed starting Tue, May 26 through Tue, June 9. The detour uses westbound 494, Highway 77 and eastbound 494.

Traveling to, from or around the Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport this year? Plan ahead—improvements will soon be underway. Major construction will be taking place as crews work to better the quality and safety on your route. Highway 5 (between 494 and Highway 62) will have closures and detours from April until October.

Eastbound Hwy 5 is closed between 494 and Hwy 55/62.

Multiple bridge and ramp closures at Highways 5/62/55 interchange.

Westbound Hwy 5 is closed between Hwy 55/62 and 494. Detour routes will be shown on the map closer to the work dates.


494/35E Bridge and Ramp Work

The ramp from northbound 35E to westbound 494 is closed April 10-June 1.

Detour uses northbound 35E, Hwy 62, southbound 35E and westbound 494.

494/35E Road Work

Westbound 494 between Dodd Rd. and Hwy 55 is reduced to two lanes from April 12-June 1.

  • If you use a navigation app, map the drive before you hit the road to catch delays from other projects and unrelated traffic slowdowns.
  • We’ll be underway in the heart of Minnesota construction season, so this may not be the only construction zone on your route.

Local bus route 54

If your arrival time isn’t flexible, you may need to catch an earlier bus. Route 54 buses, with service between the airport and St. Paul, are adjusting most routes to minimize schedule impacts during construction.


Highway 5 closures and detours will add extra time to your drive through the area or to nearby destinations. The longest delays are expected during peak weekday travel times.

  • Highway 5: Highway 5 between 494 and the Mississippi River will be open to traffic in one direction.
  • Detour routes: Even if there are fewer vehicles on the road, the detours will add time to your trip. See the map.
  • Interstate 494: Lane restrictions and ramp closures at the 494/35E interchange and in the surrounding area may also add time to your trip, and possibly require a different route.

For bicyclists and pedestrians

The Snelling Lake Trail, which runs parallel with eastbound Highway 5 in Fort Snelling State Park, will be closed one month to complete drainage work down the bluff. Trail users will use Snelling Lake Road to bypass the closed trail section. Sign up to receive project email updates so you know in advance when the trail closure happens.

If you travel through St. Paul using Highway 5, or live/work nearby, you’ll be impacted by construction. Highway 5 closures and detours will affect access to and from St. Paul. Plan extra time for your commute, and know your route before you hit the road.

Planned closures

  • Eastbound Highway 5 between 494 and Davern Street. Beginning in April, Highway 5 will be closed for eastbound traffic.
  • Highway 5 at Highways 5/55/62. Beginning in July, bridges and ramps to/from westbound Highway 5 where Highway 62/55 crosses will be closed for up to a month. The eastbound Highway 62/55 to westbound Highway 5 ramp will remain open.
    Please note: To connect to Highway 62/55 from St. Paul you may to need follow an alternate route.
  • Westbound Highway 5 between Highway 62/55 and 494. Beginning in mid July, Highway 5 will be closed for westbound traffic.
    Please note: The pedestrian bridge over Highway 5 will remain open during construction.

Detour routes are carefully planned to reroute traffic on highways. Our goal is to preserve city streets that aren’t designed to handle highway traffic.
